An Asbestos Refurbishment and Demolition (R&D) Survey is a mandatory, intrusive survey that must be carried out before any major refurbishment or demolition work begins on a building constructed before the year 2000.
The purpose of this survey is to identify, locate, and record all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) within the specific areas where planned works will take place, ensuring that people are protected from exposure to harmful asbestos fibres.
Unlike a standard management survey, the R&D survey involves destructive inspection techniques to gain access to all possible areas — including those that are hidden, enclosed, or otherwise difficult to reach. Any suspected ACMs are then sampled, photographed, and sent to a laboratory for analysis, with the results forming a detailed report to guide safe project planning and asbestos removal where necessary.
